A family story is of Taut's son, Lev M Baugh, recalled as a child that his father had come to them, sat all the kids on the bed and told them he had to leave. He didn't explain why he was leaving but he set a large pile of money on the bed and told them that this money would help them get through while he was gone. He told them he was not coming back. It had been rumored that Taut while working as a Texas Ranger had stolen some money. He was now wanted by the law. They never heard from him again. He totally abandoned his family. He is found living in Stanislaus County where he had remarried and died there.
