Samuel S. Hornbeck served as a Sergeant in Company F of the 28th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.

He was a son of Isaac Hornbeck, who was born about 1790 in Kentucky.

His mother was Mary Mahala Allen, who was born in Virginia in 1800.

He was married (one source states 1866, another source states September 27, 1867) to America Louise Ferguson.

Samuel S. Hornbeck enlisted to fight for the Union Army on October 14, 1861. His place of enlistment is listed as New Haven, Kentucky. Records show that his rank at enlistment was Sergeant. He joined Company F of the 28th Kentucky Infantry on January 23, 1862. Samuel was mustered out of United States service on September 23, 1863 at Louisville, Kentucky. Samuel survived the Civil War. He is buried with a standard Civil War soldier's headstone in Pennsylvania Run Cemetery. While a soldier's date of death is normally included on his headstone, Sergeant Hornbeck's headstone has no such information on it.

He was re-interred in Pennsylvania Run Cemetery on September 20, 1906.

According to the Civil War Pension Index, his widow, America Hornbeck, died on December 9, 1911 at age 71 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.
