Samuel Ridlen was born in Noble Twp., Shelby County, Indiana; the 5th child of Stephen and Mary (Stephen) Ridlen; his siblings were Cumberland Ridlen, Ann (Ridlen) Wright, Charles Warren Ridlen, Emaline Amanda (Ridlen) Leffler, Ebenezer V. Ridlen, Mary J. Ridlen, Orphia Wilder (Ridlen) Slifer, and Sarah L. (Ridlen) Wilder .

He served three separate enlistments in the U. S. Army, whose records furnish the following detail:
"Samuel Ridlen joined for duty and enrolling November 18, 1863, in Decatur County, Indiana. On Nov. 25, 1863, he was assigned a Private to Capt. Robbins' Co., 123rd Regt Ind. Inf., (later renamed as Co. A., 123rd Reg't., Ind. Inf.), at the age 20 years. (Company Muster-In-Roll dated Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana.) His residence was listed as Adams Township, Decatur County, Indiana.

Records further go on to state: Bounty Paid: $60.00. Remarks: Premium paid, $2.00. First term was in Capt. Harris' Co., 16 Ind. Vols., Sept 12, 1861 to May 14, 1862. Second term was in Capt. Jenkins' Co. 76 Ind. Vols. July 19, 1862 to Aug. 20, 1862, when term expired. Description: Age: 20 years; Height: 5' 6½"; Complexion: dark; Eyes: hazel; Hair: light; Born: Shelby County, Indiana; Occupation: farmer. Enlisted November 18, 1863 at St. Paul, by I. Robbins, for a term of three years. Killed June 30, 1864, while on the line of his duty near Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, near Marietta."

The following also appears, in Army records: "I certify on honor that Samuel Ridlen, a private of Capt. Irvin Robbins Company A of the 123 Regiment of Foot Volunteers, of the State of Indiana, born in Shelby County, State of Indiana, aged 20 years; 5' 6½"; dark complexion, hazel eyes, light hair, and by occupation a farmer, having joined the company on its organization at Greensburg, Indiana, and enrolled in it at a muster into the service of the United States at Decatur County, Indiana, on the 18th day of November 1863, for the term of three years; and having served HONESTLY and FAITHFULLY with his company to the present date, is now entitled to a DISCHARGE by reason of Death, died June 30, 1864, by reason of a musket shot. The said Samuel Ridlen was last paid by Paymaster Maj. Stephenson to include the 18th day of December 1863, and has pay due him from that time to the present date; he is entitled to pay and subsistence for traveling to the place of enrollment and whatever other allowances are authorized to volunteer soldiers, or militias, so discharged. He has received $39.95, advanced by the United States on account of clothing.

"There is to be stopped from him: for knack sack, rubber blanket, canteen, 2 overcoats, (undecipherable), haversack, and shelter tent, amounting to $8.96. He had no debts to sutler or laundress. Given in duplicate, at Decatur, Georgia, this 1st day of October, 1864." ~Signed Irvin Robbins, Captain
