Sarah and Frank had what was called a "step stove" which had an oven area, a firebox for inserting the wood and a box where ashes were swept.
Frank was working on a wagon wheel and couldn't get the metal ring off the hub because the wood was swollen. He brought the hub into the house and put it into the firebox of the stove to burn the wood out. When the wood burned out, Sarah was near the stove when the metal ring popped off and hit her in the head and killed her.
