David L. Gerkin, age 66, of Dunlap passed away peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2009, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on July 5, 1943, in Shelbyville, Ill., to Roy A. and Leola M. Curry Gerkin. Dave married Mescal "Mick" Rogers on Sept. 4, 1965, in Augsburg, Ill.
He received his bachelor's degree in engineering at Tri-State University in Angola, Ind., and his master's degree from Bradley University.
Dave was employed as an engineer for Caterpillar Inc. for 36 years, prior to his retirement in 2001.
He was a member of Arrowhead Country Club and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Peoria.
Dave was a devoted Christian and an avid golfer, and he loved to travel.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mescal "Mick"; his children, Stacey (Ed) Huber of St. Joseph, Mich., Patrick (Mary) Gerkin of St. Charles, Ill., and Shelley (Jeff) Herzog of St. Louis, Mo.; his grandchildren, Erin and Grace Huber, Michael, Patrick and Ryan Gerkin, and Emily and Drew Herzog; his sister, Judy (Jerry) Peterson of Denver, Colo.; his mother-in-law, Margaret Rogers; and five nieces and nephews.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Dean Rogers.
Funeral services for Dave will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2009, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Joseph Meyer and the Rev. Ronald Miller officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
