Laurence P. Ackerson, 94, of Ashburnham Road, died suddenly on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at his residence.

He was born in Lincoln, ME on April 3, 1914, the son of Percy and Gertrude (Crory) Ackerson. He was raised in ME, had lived a period of time in Plaistow, NH and in New Ipswich since 1968.

He was a graduate of Aroostook Central Institute of Mars Hill, ME.

He was a manager for Boston Mutual Life Insurance Company, in Boston for 35 years retiring in 1975. He was past president of Merrimack Valley Life Underwriters Association. He taught Life Underwriters Training courses in Merrimack Valley.

Lived many years in Plaistow, NH where he was active in the Boy Scouts. He organized Cub Pack and Explorer Post in that town. He was also active on the Boy Scout Council level serving as chairman of camping and activity committee of Lone Tree Council in Haverhill, MA. He served as Assistant Squadron Leader of an Explorer Scout Post from Lone Tree Council at a weeks encampment called “Wings of West Point” with approximately 50 other Explorer Posts from New England and was awarded the “Honor Squadron” for the week.

He was a member of Trinity Lodge #56 Knights of Pythias of Plaistow , and went through the chairs to Chancellor Commander. He entered the Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias in NH and served as Grand Chancellor. He was elected as Supreme Representative of the Supreme Lodge Knights of Pythias and served two, two year terms. He was also elected to the Supreme Outer and Inner Guard of the order, which covers the US and Canada. He was the first Supreme Lodge officer from NH in 100 years. He had also served on several other committees of the Supreme Lodge.

Mr. Ackerson was a member of Gideon Masonic Lodge # 84 of Kingston, NH where he had served as Master. He was a Past Patron of Corinthian Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of Kingston, also Past Patron of John Everett Chapter, New Ipswich. He was a Noble of the Mystic Shrine in Bektash Temple of Concord, NH, and also served as a 32nd degree Mason.

A member of the New Ipswich Congregational Church, he served as member of the Diaconate, Board of Trustees where he was moderator for 19 years. Also the Children’s Fair Committee, and church historian. He had up-dated history of the church and children’s fair which was published.

Mr. Ackerson was New Ipswich Town Auditor for many years and also served as Deputy Town Moderator. He was chairman of a committee to refurbish the old town hall, and was secretary and member of the New Ipswich Antique Fire Brigade. In Plaistow he was a member of the school board and was a charter member of the municipal budget committee.

He was a charter member of the NH Government Finance Officers Association. Also a Trustee and Tour Guide of the Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge. He had received the Distinguish Service Award in 1998.

His wife, Beatrice E. (McNinch) Ackerson died in 1993. A son, Richard A. Ackerson died in 2001.

He is survived by a son, Robert L. Ackerson of Freedom, NH. A daughter, Patricia L. King of Atkinson, NH. Eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held September 13, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the New Ipswich Congregational Church. Burial will be in Central Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the New Ipswich Congregational Church, P.O. Box 141, New Ipswich, NH 03071.
