Josiah Baxter Herrell/Harrell, known as "JB" was the fourth child and eldest son of William Amilack "Shang" Herrell and Harriet S. Conner. Born October 31, 1875 on the family farm in District 4, Anderson County, Tennessee.
He served his country by enlisting 02 July 1898 in the US Army, Co G, US Volunteer Infantry, during the Spanish American War and was discharged on 15 March 1899 with the rank of Corporal.
He married Nancy "Nannie" Mae Hamblin on 27 Nov 1912 in Anderson County, Tennessee.
He retired after over 20 years of Civil Service with the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. His favorite treat for visitors was to take them on the printing floor and let them hold a stack of uncut bills and then give them a piece of paper that commemorated them holding "x" dollars.
"For years my mother carried one of those slips of papers as a souvenir of her visit to Uncle JB & Aunt Nannie and Sophie. Sophie and mother (Bess Pruden) were best friends in the early years before they moved to Wash DC. In fact, mother thought Daddy was sweet on Sophie the first few times he visited!" After retirement, JB and Nannie made their home in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he died 20 Apr 1958 and was buried at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Florida.
