A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five and mustered into federal service July 5, 1861, as a private with Co. E, 10th Pennsylvania Reserves (39th Pennsylvania Infantry), although the locations of those events is as yet unknown. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer December 18, 1863, at Warrenton, Virginia, and re-mustered December 19. On or about June 1, 1864, with the dissolution of the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps, he transferred to Co. I, 191st Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service and honorably discharged with his company June 28, 1865, at Washington DC.
