nach geschehener glaubhafter Anzeige dem hiesigen Bür-
ger und Zeugschmied Heinrich Bender von seiner Ehe-
frau Elisabetha geborner Brechtel das zweite Kind
der zweite Knabe geboren und am neunten dieses ge-
tauft, wo er den Namen Konrad erhielt.
Pathe ist: Konrad des hiesigen Bürgers und Maurer-
meisters Jakob Brechtel und deßen Ehefrau Katharina
gebornen Schwörer ehelicher Sohn, welcher mit dem
Vater dieses Kindes und mir dem Geistlichen, der die
Taufe verrichtet, gegenwärtiges Protokoll unter-
zeichnet.

the seventh of September, at nine o'clock in the evening,
according to credible report already made, to the citizen
and tool smith from here, Heinrich Bender, of his wife,
Elisabetha, née Brechtel, was born their second child,
their second boy, and on the nineth, he was baptized,
whereby he received the name Konrad.
Godfather is: Konrad, legitimate son of the citizen and
master mason from here, Jakob Brechtel and his wife,
Katharina, née Schwörer, who, along with the father
of the child and me, the priest who performed the
baptism, signs the present record.

Nikolaus "Nick" Bender, born Jan 11, 1843, Gernsheim, Germany - Apr 27, 1865; listed as barber on 1860 census working with Frank Henry, a 28 year old barber from Germany; joined Union Army as a corporal in Company B, 4th KY Calvary on 5/26/1863 in Louisville for a three year term, captured 4/5/1865 Centreville, AL. At wars end, on April 27, 1865, after loading passengers and cargo and making repairs to its boilers, the Sultana left Vicksburg headed for stops in Memphis, TN, Cairo, IL, Evansville, IN, Louisville, KY and Cincinnati, OH. Shortly after taking on fresh reserves of coal and water near Helena, Arkansas, nine miles north of Memphis, the steamboat Sultana's three boilers exploded, either by sabotage or accident. Of the estimated 2300-2500 people on board, approximately 1700 - mostly former POW Union soldiers - died in the blast. The boat normally carried 376 passengers and crew. Heinrich Bender immigrated prior to his wife and four sons, arriving in America in 1845, having left Gernsheim in May of that year. His wife Elisabeth and children arrived in New York City on July 27, 1847 from Antwerp, Belgium aboard the "Sylvester." Conrad was listed aboard the manifest as "Peter", which may have been his middle name.

Conrad was a tinner by trade and operated a successful business at 238 Preston between Green (Liberty) and Walnut (Muhammad Ali Blvd) Streets.

Conrad could speak but not read or write English; he may have briefly served in Union Army during Civil War in the Thurston Guard Regiment (two Conrad Benders from Louisville enlisted, one deserted).
