John Marvin Brandon, of Montgomery, was born May 8, 1888, at Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was the son of F. T. J. and Caroline (Woodward) Brandon, the former a native of Gwinnett County, Georgia, a Methodist minister who for fifty-two years served in the Alabama Conference and held numerous positions of honor in the denomination of his faith. His paternal grandparents were Francis Lawson and Zillah (Haynie) Brandon, the former a native of Halifax County, Virginia, the latter of Calhoun County, Alabama. The Brandon family originally came to America from England and is of Scots and Irish stock.

Mr. Brandon received his education in the public schools of the State and began his business career in the State Auditor's office in Montgomery, July, 1908. He remained in that connection until January, 1923, when he was made Secretary of the Alabama Public Service Commission. He was chosen in the general election of 1926 to hold the position of Secretary of State and entered upon his duties January 17, 1927. He was chosen in the general election of 1930 to hold the position of State Auditor and entered upon his duties January 19, 1931. He served as State Treasurer, 1935-1939; as Secretary of State, 1939-1943; as State Auditor, 1943-1947; as State Treasurer, 1947-1951; as State Auditor, 1951-1955, and elected State Treasurer, November 1954. He was a Democrat, a Methodist, and a Knight of Pythias.

Married: June 1915, in Montgomery, to Laurie, daughter of Lawrence W. and Ella (Kendall) Hunter, of Lowndesboro. Children: 1. Mary Ella.
