Mr. Burghart was employed at John Morrell's from 1931 to 1951. He then worked at the Santa Fe Railroad shops for a year. He was a steel cutter at Capitol Iron Works for 21 years before he retired.
He was born Aug. 26, 1908, in Topeka, the son of Jacob and Anna Margarritha Helmer Burghart.
Mr. Burghart was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 534 and the James W. Gibbons Assembly of 4th degree of the Knights of Columbus.
He married Elizabeth Brost on Dec. 27, 1930, in Aurora, Ill. She died Nov. 9, 1989. He also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Burghart, on Jan. 17, 1964.
Survivors include six sons, Albert G. Burghart, Harold Burghart, Robert Burghart, Gerald Burghart and Richard Burghart, all of Topeka, and Donald Burghart, Junction City; two daughters, Rosemary Halliwell, Kettering, Ohio, and Debra Smith, Topeka; two brothers, Joe Burghart, Aurora, Ill., and Jake Burghart, Topeka; two sisters, Marie Gartner and Barbara Burghart, both of Topeka; 27 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Matthew Catholic Church.
Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Mr. Burghart will lie in state after 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthew Catholic Church, where a Knights of Columbus Council No. 534 Rosary and James W. Gibbons Assembly of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus Council Rosary and Chalice Service will be recited at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Parish Rosary at 7 p.m. Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Catholic Church or American Diabetes Association.
