Andrew Bosworth was the son of Collin Bosworth (1789-1824) and Nancy McKinney (c1796-1824). Soon after his parents' marriage in Fayette Co. Kentucky, the couple moved to Louisiana where the new groom barely managed to scrape together a living as a steamboat captain on the mighty Mississippi River. Andrew was born in 1818 and his little brother Collin - his only sibling - was born in 1820. Their father's steamboat named "Hope" proved anything but hopeful for the family when it sank in the Mississippi River after hitting a snag in December of 1823. After creditors demanded compensation, their father was forced to file bankruptcy the following March and most of the family household goods were sold at public auction. Less than ten months later, tragedy again struck the family when the boys' parents died of disease (yellow fever and malaria) three weeks apart in September 1824, leaving the boys orphans and destitute. Collin and his brother Andrew were probably raised by family members back in Kentucky or Tennessee following their parents' deaths. The year 1850 finds Collin and his brother working in their uncle's rope factory situated on the banks of the Cumberland River in Nashville. The factory burned in the Civil War but both brothers remained in Nashville where they met their wives and raised families of their own.
