Edited summary of Mr. Acord's obituary as published in the Raleigh Register --- Oct. 24, 1975

Funeral services for Snowden L. Acord, 64, Eccles, Raleigh County, W.Va. were conducted by the Rev. Albert Phillips and the Rev. Nolan Barlow at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Burial was in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, W.Va.

Snowden was born on Monday, April 5, 1911, in Saxon, Raleigh County, a son of John Acord and Pearline Morris Acord.

Snowden married his first wife Della Mae Cozart in 1932 in Raleigh County. Della was born on 15 Jun 1916 in West Virginia, a daughter of Robert Cozart and Eva Polk Cozart. Della, 16, died on 12 April 1933 of tuberculosis. (Marriage record, West Virginia Vital Research Records, http://archive.wvculture.org/vrr/va_mcdetail.aspx?Id=11504081 and Della Cozart's death certificate, http://archive.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=715564&Type=Death)

Snowden and Della Marie had a child, Thomas Ray Acord. Thomas died on 22 Oct 1935 in Glen Daniel, Raleigh County, W.Va., of croup. He was two years and nine months old. (His death certificate online has his birth year wrong.) He was buried "in Glen Daniel." His father Snowden was born in Saxon, W.Va. From that it is a good supposition that "Thomas H" buried in Cove Creek Cemetery, Saxon, ( Find a Grave Memorial ID: 55138942) is Thomas Ray Acord.

In January 1934 in Raleigh County, Snowden married Gracie Thelma Hall. (West Virginia Vital Research Records - http://archive.wvculture.org/vrr/va_mcdetail.aspx?Id=11505899) Gracie was born on 07 Apr 1919 in West Virginia, a daughter of William Jackson Hall and second wife Laura Ann McMillion. In June 1934 there was a notice in The Raleigh Register, Beckley, that the couple had separated. There is a record of a divorce granted in Oregon in 1943 to Snowden Acord of West Virginia and Gracie Hall of Oregon. (Oregon, U.S., State Divorces, 1925-1971, Document 152-213, Ancestry)

Snowden enlisted in the Army on March 17, 1942, where he served for the duration of World War II.

In 1944 Snowden married Della Gravley Kapety, a widow, in Virginia. (Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014, Certificate 1944009397, Ancestry)

He was a resident of Eccles for 37 years and was employed in the Eccles mines prior to his retirement. He was also a member of the UMWA Local 5770. Snowden was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church at Eccles.

Snowden was preceded in death by his parents and son Thomas Ray Acord.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Della Marie Gravely Acord, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Claude ( Pauline Elizabeth ) Stump. MacArthur: two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Acord, Eccles. and Mrs. Flossie Acord, Bolt; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Denver Charles (Buck) and Carl (Buddy) Acord, Dale Wright, James Jones and Billy Gravely.
