Orphaned at the age of 8 when both his parents died of a mysterious illness in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama area. Originally one of six children, three of Joseph's brothers died around the same time as his parents. Joseph and his two surviving siblings, John Junius James & Mary Pauline James, were taken in and raised by members of his mother's family.

Grandson of the author Judge William Dobein James. Great-Grandson of the Revolutionary War hero Maj. John James. Great-Great-Great Grandson of John William James, Captain of the Dragoons under King William of Orange and native of Pembrokeshire, Wales.
