Coring and Adams county people in general were shocked to learn of the death of
Valentine E. Miller, the popular live stock auctioneer, a victim of Spanish
influenza. Mr. Miller had been taken ill at a live stock sale in Sioux City and
sent to a hospital. Later his condition was such that his wife and his parents
were sent for, and they were at his bedside for a little over a week before the
end came, last Saturday morning at 6:30 o'clock. The body was brought to Corning
and funeral services were held Monday at the Catholic church, requiem high mass
being celebrated by Rev. Father Dollard, the local pastor, assisted by Fathers
Tracy of Lenox, Wise and Malone of Creston. The body was laid to rest in Calvary
cemetery.
"Bud" as Mr. Miller was familiarly known to most people, was born in this county
and lived here all his life. He was the son of J.N.B. Miller and wife, and at
the time of his death was 31 years and 9 days old. On the 16th of November, 1910
he was married to Miss Mary Agnes Dowling, of this county, and to them were born
three children; Evelyn, aged 7 years, Edward, aged 4 years, and Geneva, aged 9
months. They, with their mother, the parents and numerous other relatives are
left to mourn the loss of their loved one.Mr. Miller was a keen business man and
turned many a dollar for the people of this community, as well as for himself.
He was a man who did business on a large scale, backing his judgment with his money. His dealings in fine stock were a great benefit to Adams county. In this
field he was a real expert, and his services were so much in demand that he paid
little attention to the farm sale business during the last few months. Mr.
Miller was a big hearted citizen, full of life and energy. His demise will be felt in many ways in this community.
