Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr. - was born October 27, 1842, in Henry County, Alabama, near Abbeville, and died November 19, 1903, in Sevier County, Tennessee. He was the son of Mathew Elmore (1792 NC-Nov.1857 Jackson Co. Fla.), and Lucinda (Lucy) Tait-Elmore. Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr. married first time to Emiline Williams (1846-Sept. 1862), on May 30, 1861, in Jackson County, Florida, Emiline died September 1862, there in Jackson County, Florida about the time Mathew was entering the Civil War in Jackson County, Fla. in the Confederate Army, no children were born to their marriage; his second marriage was to Rhonda Caroline Newman-Lafollette, August 15, 1865, in Sevier County, Tenn, who was widow of William R. Lafollette, who died during the Civil War, leaving five children from his marriage to Rhoda. Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr. married Rhoda when he went to Sevier, Tenn. with a USA Navy buddy George Lafollette, who was on the patrol boat, USS Ohio & USS Iosco with him during the Civil War, and who both were discharged at Brooklyn, NY on March 28, 1865, serving on the same patrol boat that he was on. Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr. & Rhoda Lafollette-Elmore were the parents of three Elmore children from their marriage; William Henry Elmore, born July 3, 1866; Mary Virginia Elmore who was born May 7, 1868; Dolly Ann Elmore being born on April 13, 1870. Mathew was wounded in a gun powder explosion, and remained blind in one eye the remainder of his life. Mathew M. has a large USA Navy headstone military marker above his gravesite in Jones Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, there in Sevier County, Tennessee where he and Rhoda were members of this church for many years. Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr. enlisted as Private, Co. E, 6th Fla. Inf Reg at Marianna, Fla. Jackson County, March 28, 1862. He went missing at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, and was taken to Rock Island, Illinois Union Prison as a POW, and enlisted in the Union USA Navy from January 19, 1864 to July 25, 1865. Mathew M. (Maston) Elmore, Jr. had dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair, 5 ft 11 inches tall, when he was discharged.
