Mr. Allen was born June 14, 1837, in Alymer, Quebec, and was married in that city in the early 60's to Miss A. M. Holt. They came to Michigan 36 years ago and settled near Smith's Crossing where they lived until the death of the mother, since then Mr. Allen has lived with his son Herbert of Smith's Crossing, coming to Midland to the home of Frank Allen last fall, where he died.
The funeral services were held in the M. E. church [Methodist Evangelical] at Smith's Crossing Tuesday, Rev. Thomas Marah officiating and interment was made in Pine Grove cemetery beside the wife and Mr. Allen's mother. A brief prayer service was held at the Frank Allen home conducted by Rev. J. Bacon, before the body was taken to Smith's Crossing.
Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Allen, six of whom, four sons and two daughters, survive; Wm. J. of Detroit, Frank of Midland, Herbert of Smith's Crossing, and Samuel C. of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Maria Whitman [Maria Louise Allen], and Mrs. William Lincoln [Mildred Allen] of Freeland, also one sister, Mrs. W. L. Schuter of Seattle, Washington, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
In his early manhood it is recalled that Mr. Allen was a fine axeman and while working in the woods near his Canadian home, the Prince of Wales-later King Edward-visited Canada, and Mr. Allen was the axeman selected to do all the axe work on falling a large tree, except the finishing stroke of the axe, which the Prince gave. Later the stump was squared up and a record of the fact that the tree was felled by the Prince of Wales was carved upon it.
