When Alfred arrived in Vietnam 26 January 1967, he was assigned to Hotel
Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
The battalion was participating in Operation Essex, a search and destroy operation with Hotel Company operating in the vicinity of Ap Bon (2), Hiep Duc Valley and 10 kilometers south southeast of An Hoa Airfield, when the company encountered hostile NVA soldiers. Alfred died as a result of a gunshot wound to the chest from hostile rifle fire during the intense fighting and the Marines lost 23 men.
Survived by his parents, Norman V and Virginia M Anderson of 224 North 34th St, Kansas City, Kansas.
