Up until the time of his enlistment in the cavalry, Samuel appears to have worked as a farm hand.
After the war, Samuel returned to farming. He married Mary Henderson, daughter of Widdis and Sarah Foreman Henderson 7 January 1864 in Springfield, Sangamon Co. He took his family to KS and returned from there in 1874.
He ended his working life as a rural mail carrier, and was among the first carriers employed when rural mail delivery was in its infancy and only experimental.
