Son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Deitrich. Born in Bloomington, IN and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1935. He entered Indiana University and obtained his masters degree in mathematics in 1939. He then went to Hartford, CT where he was an actuarial student with Aetna Life Insurance Company. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to Fort Bragg for basic training. He later went to Fort Sill, OK for his officer's training and was commissioned on November 11, 1942. He was assigned to a replacement battalion. Shortly after March 1, 1943 he was assigned to overseas and was sent to England. He was assigned to the 319th Field Artillery Glider Battalion as a range finder. He became Monroe County's first reported D-Day casualty on June 6, 1944.

He was married to Martha Ricks Dietrich.
