WORLD WAR I, WORLD WAR II


Lieutenant Commander Duncan was a career navy man, rising from the enlistent man's ranks (mustang) to become an Officer with the United States Navy. He enlisted in January of 1912 and retired from the navy in February of 1947. He saw sea duty on the USS Chaumont, USS Davis, USS O'Brien and the USS Newport News. He was assigned shore duty in Guam, the Philippines, US Naval Hospital Mare Island, (Vallejo) CA, US Naval Hospital Norman, OK and US Naval Hospital Puget Sound, WA. During World War II he was assigned to the US Naval Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma, where he was cited for meritorious conduct by Vice Admiral Ross McIntire. The citation reads: "For exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as the Administrative Assistant to the Medical Officer in Command at the U.S.Naval Hospital, Norman Oklahoma, from 22 August 1942 to 15 February 1944. By his foresight, initiative, perseverance, and outstanding ability during this period he performed outstanding service to the Government in ably assisting the Commanding Officer in the procurement and installation of essential equipment. He rendered further service by his ability and comprehensive knowledge of hospital administrative procedure and in training and organizing the admistrative departments of that command. His tireless devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon Lieutenant Commander Duncan and the Naval Service." LTC Duncan was awarded the US Navy Good Conduct medal with three re-enlistment bars, the Navy Mexican Service medal, the World War I Victory medal, the World War II Victory medal, the American Defense Service medal and the American Theater Campaign medal.
