We perform a truly unwelcome duty in announcing the loss which our society has sustained, in the decrease of another of its most valuable and respected inhabitants.
Colonel John Nivison, late Recorder of this Borough, and for many years preceding an eminent member of the Bar, departed this life on Saturday night last, about 12 o’clock, after a lingering illness of several months. Col. N. had attained only his 60th year, yet so long and zealously had he discharged the duties of senior magistrate of this Borough, that all classes of the community looked up to him as the guardian of their rights and their interests.
Prompt in obeying the calls of duty, deeply learned in the science of law, and in flexibly just in the administration of it, his death will long be regarded by this community as a public calamity and the bench will long feel the deprivation of his able and impartial council.
In the relations of private life, his virtues are to generally known and appreciated to derive an additional luster from a newspaper eulogy. We will only add, that his public and private character commanded our respect and admiration while living, and that we claim a participation in the general regret that is felt for the loss of so worth a citizen.
