South Carolina Governor. In 1818, he joined the US Army, was appointed a Second Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain before resigning his commission in 1829. He served on the South Carolina Assembly Bank Board and signed the Nullification Ordinance of 1832 which proclaimed the state's nullification of federal tariff laws. During the Seminole War, he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the South Carolina Militia and in 1836, was elected Governor of South Carolina, serving until 1838. After leaving office, he was appointed a US Indian Agent at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma and served until 1846. At the outbreak of the Mexican War, he was commissioned Colonel of the Palmetto Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers and was killed in action at the Battle of Churubusco, Mexico. US Congressmen William Butler Jr. and Andrew P. Butler, were his brothers.
