Shirley Ann was born in Chicago to Frank and Helen (Clark) Barnard. She was raised in the historic Pullman district on the city's south side. She attended George M. Pullman Grammar School, graduating in 1945. In January 1949, she graduated from Fenger High School. Her first job was in the floral department and then at the snack counter at S.S. Kresge's on Michigan Avenue. After graduation in 1949 she worked at Sherwin Williams paint factory while raising her family. On February 4th 1951, she married Tony Cantele at St. Anthony of Padua church. They were blessed with three daughters.
In September of 1979, she married Victor Verbauwen. They settled in Riverdale and remained there until Victor's sudden death in 1988. Shirley then moved to Greendale, Wisconsin to be near her daughters. After a courageous battle with breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease, she passed away peacefully on July 29, 2009 in St. Francis, WI.
