Robert R. Burns, 64, Akron, Ind., drowned in the St. Johns River near Andersen?s Lodge, Welaka, yesterday at 2:15 p.m. when he was apparently thrown from a boat as the motor started, Justice of the Peace Clayton Frank said.
Frank, acting as coroner, ruled the drowning accidental and said no inquest was necessary since the accident was witnessed by Wildlife Officer F. C. Bennett from another boat some distance away.
Bennett rushed to rescue Burns, pulled him out of the river and took him to the dock at Sportsman?s Lodge where he applied artificial respiration and revived him momentarily. However, he apparently immediately suffered a heart attack and died, Frank said.
Burns and Mrs. Burns were staying at Andersen?s Lodge and he was reported going to follow Wildlife Officer Bennett to the Oklawaha River to fish. Bennett was ahead in his boat and waiting for Burns to get his motor started when the accident occurred, Frank said.
Burns was a farmer.
His body will be forwarded by Masters Funeral Home, Palatka, to Akron for services and burial.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Sarah Kathryn Burns, Akron, Ind.; a daughter, Mrs. Delores Callander, South Bend, Ind., a stepson, Charles A. Judd, Goshen, Ind; four sisters, Mrs. Eva D. Johnson, Mrs. Lucy Burns Lowe, South Bend, Ind., Mrs. George (Sarah Arabell) McKee, Vero Beach, and Mrs. Louella B.
