He was the son of Silas Howe (1766-1826) late of Otsego, who came with his family to Westford, NY between 1791 and 1794 from Brattleboro, Vt and born in Bolton, MA to Capt. Artemas & Abigail Howe.

Bezeleel's father, Silas Howe is credited for building the 1st Grist Mill in Westford, NY in 1794 and his grandfather, Capt. Artemas Howe lead a company of Minute men from Bolton, MA in 1775 at the battle of Lexington and Concord in the Revolutionary War.

Although via the 1855 NY census it states B. S. Howe lived in Otsego 50 years, it is believed he was born in Westford and moved with his father to Otsego sometime between 1820 and 1825.

On 18 Oct 1826, Bezeleel S. Howe of Otsego was appointed administrator of Silas Howe's intestate estate.

On 15 My 1827, (MM-518) Bezeleel S. Howe of Otsego sold Lewis E. Washburn 15 acres of land in Great lot 15 of Alexander McKee's Patent Westford next to land of David Smith (Moses Howe's brother-in-law).

On 7 Feb 1830, (SS-371) Bezeleel S. Howe of Otsego sold 10 acres of land in Westford to Robert Sweet that was formerly owned by Silas Howe deceased.

On 26 Feb 1830, (RR-331) Bezeleel S. Howe of Otsego sold Lewis E. Washburn 66 & 1/2 acres of land in Westford in Great Lot 16 of Alexander McKee's Patent that was owned by Silas Howe deceased. This land most likely contained the Howe Grist Mill built in 1794 as Lewis Edson Washburn is stated to have died in 1836 at the Grist Mill he owned in Westford. A still unexplained fact is that Lewis Edson Washburn had a sons named Silas Howe Washburn born in Westford in 1821 and Bezeleel Washburn born in Westford in 1823, but no known connection to the Howe family.

On 6 Mar 1830, (RR- 45) Bezeleel S. Howe of Otsego sold Philip Fisk land in Otsego in Copper's Patent that is stated to have been land conveyed by Evans Potter & Hosea Potter to James Cooper.

At some point most, likely before 1830, Bezeleel S. Howe married Caroline (1786-1861). She is believed to have been Caroline (Cooper) Van Buskirk, daughter of James and Naomi (Nelson)Cooper, and widow of William Van Buskirk. This is evident by the fact that in 1855. James Van Buskirk age 42 (1813), is listed as a child in B. S. Howe's household as well as a girl, C. Van Buskirk, age 14 (1841), listed as a grandchild, when Howe himself is listed at age 50 (1805). In the Howe household in 1860 census there is also listed a Maria Van Buskirk age 21 (1839).

On 6 Jun 1863, (oddly, the anniversary of his late wife's birthday) Bezeleel S. Howe made out his will (NY-39-17-289). In it, he states he had no family or children to provide for and gave his entire estate to the M. E. Church and directs that church to build a home for the poor to be called the "Howe Charity House" in Cooperstown.

On 7 Jan 1864, he amended his will to include his now 2nd wife, stated to be the former Eliza Crandal. In this codicil, he provided her the income from his estate and property for her natural life and afterward the provisions in his will would take effect. His will was proven on 5 May 1868.

In 1865, Bezeleel S. Howe and wife Eliza are listed living in the village of Cooperstown in Otsego, NY. He and Eliza are both recorded as having been married twice. Eliza, age 46 (1819) is stated to have been born in England.
