George Emanuel Johnson, 93, of Elgin, Texas, died Sunday, May 5, 1996, at the Pflugervile Care Center.

Services will be held Tuesday, May 7, 1996, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Elgin. Burial will follow at the Elgin City Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson was born to Carl W. and Annie Westling Johnson on August 31, 1902, in the Waterloo Community near Taylor, Texas. The Johnson family purchased a farm and moved to the Lund Community near Elgin, Texas, in 1904. George attended Lund School, was a member of Manda Methodist Church and later First United Methodist Church in Elgin. He was a faithful member of the Prayer Group, the C.W. Webb Sunday School Class, and the Adult Fellowship Group of the Methodist Church. He served as a school trustee for the country schools of Lund and Manda, and was an active member of A.A.R.P. in Elgin. Mr. Johnson was a faithful Christian and lived by biblical principals.

George married Vergie Lee Walker of Weir, Texas, on June 23, 1937. They bought the family farm at Lund in 1947. The old family home was torn down and a more modern one was built in 1951. George farmed and raised cattle most of his life. He also worked at the Travis State School from 1957 until his retirement in 1969. Vergie and George lived at Lund for 52 years. Because of failing health they moved to Austin in 1989 and in late 1993 they moved to Pflugerville Care Center.

George was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was always sociable, loved to play ''42'', ''talk Swedish'', liked cows, enjoyed farming, and was always ready to drink a cup of coffee and have a cookie. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren. George was kind, gentle, easy going and easy to get along with.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, all of his brothers, Walter, Anton, Harry, Lawrence, Elmer, his twin brother Clarence, and his only sister, Edith.

He is survived by his loving wife, Vergie; son, Gary Johnson and wife Barbara of Austin; daughter, Shirlene Ferguson and husband Will of Las Cruces, New Mexico; grandchildren, Terry and Sherri Johnson, Jason, David, and Cathy Ferguson; sister-in-law, Helen Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Special thanks to Dorothy Swenson and Opal and Eldon Sundbeck for all their love, kind deeds, and words of encouragement.

Pallbearers will be Linn Bledsoe, Travis Lundgren, Elmer Eklund, Harold Sundbeck, Gaynor Ford, Howard Johnson, Fred Lundgren Jr., and Curtis Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Webb, Philip Knowles and Raymond Johnson.
