Mathilda Adler Friendly was the wife of Samson Hiram Friendly. She and her husband were both born in Germany and moved to Oregon with their families. They were married November 16, 1873 in Salem, Marion County, Oregon at the house of Leopold Hirsch by Reverend May. Mathilda was a resident of Salem at the time of their marriage. Leopold Hirsch was the father in law of Mathilda's brother Carl Adler who wed Laura Hirsch. Mathilda had a sister Anna who lived with her and Samson in 1880. Anna later married Meyer Eisenberg. Mathilda, Carl & Anna were the children of Jacob Adler.
Samson Friendly was a local Eugene merchant, he served as mayor of Eugene and as a member of the Union University Association which established the University of Oregon. He also served on the Board of Regents for many years. Friendly Hall on the University of Oregon campus is named after Samson Friendly. Samson and Matilda were parents of Carrie (m.Frederick Earl Harris), Theresa (m.Samuel Wachenheimer), Rosalie (m.Dean Hayes)Friendly.
Matilda died February 19, 1921 (Oregon Lane County Death Certificate #140). Note, The Eugene City Directory spells her name Mathilda and it is spelled Mathilda in the will of Samson Hiram Friendly. Samson died August 13, 1915 in Eugene, Oregon. Mathilda died February 19, 1921 in Eugene, Oregon.
