The Retzers were the owners Cliff Dale Farm, and John was the postmaster of Cliffdale, Calhoun County, Illinois. They operated a store and post office attached to their home, 4 miles north of Kampsville, from the early 1880's until about 1918. The building faced the Illinois River, where they also ran the Retzer steamboat landing.
At the time of her death, Mary was 87 years and 3 months old. She was survived by her husband, John, who passed away in 1952.
