He attended South Portland schools and graduated from South Portland High School class of 1934.

From 1934 until 1970 he lived in Massachusetts where he raised chickens and worked with wood. He began his boat building career at A R True's Boat Shop in Amesbury, MA.

During WWII he worked at Boston Navy Yard. After the war he worked for Charles Baltzer Boat Yard in Newburyport, MA and later operated his own boat shop there. In 1970 he moved his boat shop to Kennebunk, ME and named it Ray's Cruiser Shop.

He built 81 cabin cruisers most recently the Pegasus.

He spent many winters in Florida where he was a home builder. He also designed the administration building for Rollins College in Florida. He built the first motel in Newburyport, ME and designed and supervised construction of Port Recreation a bowling alley and roller skating rink there. He was part owner of Port Recreation which was the first bowling alley with automatic pin setters for candlepin bowling.

He was an avid pool shooter.

He is survived by a son Walter of Redlands, CA; a daughter ELizabeth Klein of Salisbury, MA; a sister Adelaide Curran Allen of South Portland, ME and Port Charlotte, FL.
