ARTICLE - OBITUARY :
TWO YOUNG WAYNESBORO AREA MEN DIE IN ACCIDENT TODAY

Two young men died and another was critically injured early today in a two-car crash on Route 16 a mile and a half east of Waynesboro.

Pronounced dead at the scene were Barry L. King, driver of one car, and his passenger, DENNIS WAYNE BENEDICT, both of Waynesboro R.D. 4.

The second driver, Daniel Lee Short, also of Waynesboro R.D. 4, was taken to Waynesboro Hospital in critically injured condition.

The ages of all three are listed as 18 by state police.

The tragedy at 12:30 a.m. occurred as King was westbound on Route 16 at apparent high rate of speed, police said King's 1967 Oldsmobile veered into the eastbound lane of traffic between Wayne Heights and Rouzerville. It collided nearly head-on with the eastbound car of Short. Short was operating a 1971 Plymouth Duster sedan.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lane. It hurled the engine from young King's auto completely across the road where it fell to the ground 40 feet away.

The King vehicle continued 205 feet, throwing both occupants out of the car.

Investigators said both autos were demolished.

Dr. John P. Manges, Franklin County coroner, declared King and Benedict dead at the scene.

Short sustained multiple injuries, according to officers.

The county's traffic death toll now stands at 21 for 1974.

DENNIS BENEDICT died of a fractured skull.

He was born in Waynesboro, Feb 25, 1956, son of C. Guy and W. Jean (Barkdoll) Benedict. All his life was lived in the Waynesboro area and he had attended the Waynesboro area schools.

Mr. Benedict had been employed by several local service station operators and for a short time worked at Landis Tool Co. He was last employed at the Ezrine Auto Center.

He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rouzerville, and the Waynesboro Fish and Game Association.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister and two brothers, Miss Deborah Benedict and Bradley K. Benedict, both at home, and Steven G. Benedict, Waynesboro R.D. 3. Also surviving are his maternal grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Robert W Barkdoll, Waynesboro R.D. 4, and his paternal grandfather, A. R. Benedict, State College.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Grove Funeral Home in charge of Pastor Gerald Houseknect. Interment will be in the Harbaugh Church Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Barry L. King died of a fractured neck.

He was born in Waynesboro, Nov, 18, 1955, son of Robert B. and Rosalie (Staley) King. All his life was lived in Waynesboro R.D. 4 area and he had attended the Waynesboro schools.

For a short time, Mr. King was employed at Landis Tool Co. and later at Grove Manufacturing Co.

He was currently employed at the Dean Hebb Toyota Garage.

He was a member of the Waynesboro and Rouzerville Fish and Game Associations.

In addition to his parents he is survived by these brothers, and sisters Terry L. King, Waynesboro R.D. 4, Mrs. Greg Shaffer and John R. King, both of Chambersburg, Kimberly S. King and Michael D. King, both at home.

He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Robert J. King, Waynesboro.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Grove Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Harbaugh Church Cemetery.

There will be no viewing.

Mr. King, 18, of Waynesboro R.D. 4, died early Saturday morning of injuries he received in an automobile accident on Route 16 east of Waynesboro.

There will be no viewing. However, the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today.
