Herbert Walter PETTENGELL
Born on June 20, 1922 at home in Sacramento, California passed away peacefully on July 25, 2009 in Sacramento. Preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Clara (Joy) Pettengell. Survived by his loving and devoted wife, LuEllen of 30 years, and his four children, Virginia (Jim) Hinrichsen, of Esparto, CA, Walter (Evelyn) Pettengell, of Palermo, CA, Rosalind (Phil) Tapia, of Woodland, CA and Raymond (Sequoia) Pettengell, of Mt Shasta, CA. He also leaves seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

Herb grew up in Sacramento attending Sierra and Crocker Schools and graduated from C. K. McClatchy in 1940. He later attended Sacramento City College. He worked in his fathers grocery store on 24th and O St during his high school years. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II. After he returned to the United States he married Elinor Carr in 1946 and started his family. He went to work for Folsom Prison and in 1951 he joined the Sacramento Fire Dept serving the local community for 31 years before retiring in 1982. After retirement, he was active in Boy Scouts, PTA and was a docent for the Sacramento History Center before deciding to return to work. He met the love of his life, LuEllen, in 1978 and they married in 1979. He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked in many positions including Boy Scout leadership positions and as a worker at the Oakland Temple until he became ill.

In 1989, he went to work for the Sacramento Convention Center, first as an usher then as a scheduler. He was a member of Sacramento History Center, VFW Post 85, USMC 5/14 Def. Bn. Assoc, Intl Assoc of FF Local 522 and Pioneer Mutual Hook and Ladder Society.

Family and Friends are invited to a Visitation on Thursday, July 30, 2009 4 pm 8 pm at Harry A Nauman & Son Funeral Chapel, 4041 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento, CA. Funeral service on Friday, July 31, 2009 at 10:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 6925 Havenhurst Dr, Sacramento, CA . Interment to follow at Masonic Lawn, 2700 Riverside Blvd, Sacramento.
