Lavon, age 83, of Viroqua went home to be with the Lord and his beloved wife, Vivian, on Friday. He was born the son of Clarence and Minnie (Anderson) Guist. He attended Readstown High School and then served his country during World War II at Fort McClellan, AL. Upon returning to Readstown, he married his soulmate and life partner of 61 years, Vivian D. Hankins, on March 24, 1948. Together, they ran the Happy Inn Café, farmed and drove for Hankins Trucking. They had three children: Jolene, Yvonne and Maynard "Buzz." The family moved to Capron, IL, where they lived for 17 years. Lavon worked for Northern Illinois Breeding Co-op and then moved on to become part owner of Midwest Agri-Sytems until 1972. In that year he and Vivian returned to Readstown where they settled on their 40 acre country home. They purchased and operated the Kickapoo Inn until 1978. During that time he organized and sponsored the highly successful Kickapoo Inn softball team. Wherever they called home, Lavon became extremely active in many community organizations, including the American Legion, VFW, Moose Lodge, Lions Club and Viroqua Eagles Club Arie 2707 where he was past president. He was a founding member of the Capron Rescue Squad and the Readstown Advance-ment Association where he selflessly dedicated many hours to the construction of the baseball field and Advancement Building. He found great joy in serving the United Methodist Church throughout his life. He and Vivian loved spending their winters at their home in Arizona where they added many people to their long list of friends. Lavon's love of family and friends was evident in almost everything he did. He will always be remembered for his common motto, "It will all work out." Lavon is survived by his children, Jolene (Michael Agnew) of Apache Junction, AZ, Yvonne (Steve) Miller of Naperville, IL, and Maynard "Buzz" (Cindy) Guist of Viroqua, WI; five grandchildren, Jodi (Tim) Greene, Scott (Katey) Miller and Christina, Nicholas and Angela Guist; two sisters, Irene Wubbenhorst of Viroqua, WI and Pauline Olson of Soldiers Grove, WI; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vivian; and his parents. Funeral services were held at Viroqua United Methodist Church. Officiating at the service was Pastor Ethan Larson with Military honors at the cemetery by the William-Schoville American Legion Post 220 and the U.S. Army Honors Team.
