G, 3rd U.S. Colored Troops, but was detached to the engineer corps throughout most of his service time. He honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865, at Jacksonville, Florida.
He married Rachel Pierce October 7, 1866, in Marietta, Lancaster County, and fathered Kate (b. @1861 - not certain she was William's daughter), Mary (b. @1865), Florence (b. 07/26/68), John H. (b. 10/31/72), Jane A. (b. 10/08/74), George S. (b. 12/23/75), David (b. 07/05/77), and Grant (b. 12/26/79). His pension file several times reports January 4 as his date of death.
