Alton Ray Bishop, 81, died at Vista Care Center at Trinity Towers in Corpus Christi on Wednesday, July 29.

Ray was born in Santa Anna, Texas, on Oct. 22, 1927. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Rose Qualls Bishop of Rockport, and their children: daughter, Barbara Bishop Lawrence of Huntsville, Ala.; son, Gary Bishop of Glen Rose; daughter, Deborah Feild, of Rockport; and son, Jerry Bishop of Austin. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Tracie Stovall Patterson, Jenifer Stovall Osbourn, Cory Stovall, Justin Feild, Angie Bishop Abeyta, Luke Bishop, Trent Bishop and Katherine Turner. Survivors also include 13 great-grandchildren.

Ray was preceded in death by his father, James Meda Bishop; mother, Lola Lee Lane Bishop; and siblings, Laverne Elizabeth Bishop Sitterson, Oral Dean Bishop, and Mary Jo Bishop Kelly.

Ray lived a full life serving God and others. He was a U.S. Naval third-class petty officer in World War II on the USS Forest Royal DD872 and was a direct descendant of American Revolutionary War heroine Laodicea "Dicey" Langston. Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1948, he attended Brownwood Business College and Brownwood Barber College. He owned and operated a successful business, Bishop's Barber Shop on Boston Avenue in Nederland, Texas, for many years. In 1966 he relocated to the Texas Hill Country. The long hair movement of the late 60s and 70s ended his barber career, so he decided to get involved with the building business by going back to school and studying to be a licensed master plumber, which he maintained until just a few years ago! He spent many years living in Kingsland, Texas. He served as deacon of the Buchanan West Baptist Church.

In 2006, Mr. Bishop was recognized as a 50-year member of the Fraternal Order of Masons and served as Worshipful Master of the Kingsland Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Lions Club, NRA and active in the Republican Party. Ray enjoyed his life in Kingsland, gardening with Rose, fishing on the Highland Lakes, spending mornings with his friends at the coffee shop, hunting in the Hill Country and working on many homes and local businesses. He sold his plumbing business and retired with Rose to Rockport in 2005 where he enjoyed the Gulf Coast.

His funeral will include Masonic Rites on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Charlie Marshall Funeral Home in Rockport. Burial will be at the Rockport Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be given to the VistaCare Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.

Arrangements entrusted to Charlie Marshall Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. in Rockport/Fulton.
