George Ivins Cannon 1920 ~ 2009
George Ivins Cannon--our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend--passed away at his home on August 4, 2009, surrounded by his family.
George, also affectionately known as "Bud," was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 9, 1920, to George Jenkins and Lucy Grant Cannon into a family of five sisters, one brother and numerous cousins. George faithfully completed a mission in the Eastern States and then served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II, where he was an LDS servicemen's group leader in Italy. On June 27, 1947, George married Isabel Hales in the Salt Lake Temple. During their 62 years of marriage, they ended each night with a prayer, a kiss and an "I love you." George and Isabel brought into their hearts and home five sons, two daughters, six daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, 32 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He cherished and loved each one of them, and they and the gospel of Jesus Christ were his greatest source of joy and happiness. After graduating from BYU, George worked for Beneficial Life Insurance Company, where he eventually served as vice-president. Here, he formed life-time associations and was loved and respected by his work associates. At the age of 46, George, with Isabel and their family, was called to preside over the Central British Mission, where he had the opportunity to serve with 550 missionaries and the wonderful British saints. It was here that he accepted the challenge to memorize and thereafter recite each day the Fourth Section of the Doctrine and Covenants. Ever since he was called as ward organist at the age of 12, George has served the Lord. In addition to his service as mission president, George has served as bishop, stake president, regional representative, Young Men general board member and general presidency counselor, patriarch and temple sealer. From 1986 to 1991, George served in the First and the Second Quorum of the Seventy. During this time, he served for three years as the Area President for the Philippines/ Micronesia area. From 1993 to 1996, George served as president of the Salt Lake Temple. Through these callings and other community associations, George has influenced countless individuals for good and developed eternal bonds of friendship. George's positive and optimistic attitude, wise counsel, dedication to the gospel and his love for people were a blessing and inspiration to everyone who knew him. The family would like to thank all of those who provided George with medical and personal care prior to his passing.
George is survived by his wife, Isabel Hales Cannon; his children George (Corinne), Wayne (Gwen), Grant (Sandra), Kent (Laurie), Douglas (Kristin), Margaret (Les) Tippetts, Mary (Jeff) Clark; 32 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister Lucy (Frank) Taylor and brother H. Stanley (Virginia) Cannon. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Rachel Heninger, Irene Lloyd, Florence Snow, Jean Willis; and a daughter-in-law Alice Clark Cannon.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at the Parleys Stake Center, 1870 East Parleys Canyon Blvd. A viewing will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 South, and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Stake Center prior to the services. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund.
