The son of Samuel & Marie (Lau) Arnold, in 1860 he was a carpenter living in Franklin Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County October 25, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 8 as a private with Co. H, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in York. He also enlisted in Franklintown, York County, August 24, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 29 as a private with Co. I, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant September 13 and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

He married Mary Miller and fathered Amanda (b. 1851, d. 01/26/52), Edwin M. (b. @1856), Sarah E. (b. 1861), Cora M. (b. @1866), and Stella M. (b. 1871). In 1880-90, he lived in Harrisburg, Dauphin County.
