11 Nov 1878: Father Abraham Sherk, who for many years has stood identified with the business interests of this community, and had a large circle of friends, died on Saturday night after a lingering illness of the past several years. Mr. Sherk for many years was one of our most active and energetic business men, and amassed quite a fortune up to the time of the coal oil speculations, when he invested quite heavily and lost the greatwer part of his possessions. These things, coupled with an advancing old age, gradually broke him down, and the last years of his life were not such as the activity and earnestness of his youthful days should have been to him. He was the founder of the ols Salem's U. B. Sunday school, with which he stood closely identified until the separation of the English and German churches took place, when he became connected with Trinity U. B. School, in which he was always an earnest and consistent worker up to the time of his inability to leave the house. Father Sherk was a consistent and devoted Christian man during all the years of his life, and his character for honesty, sobriety and integrity was unimpeachable, a record rather to be desired than much wealth and worldly honors. Of him, it can truthfully be said that he was gone from his labors to the reward accorded to all who lead a useful and devoted Christian life. [Lebanon Daily News]
