Born at Doerrenbach, Bavaria, daughter of Johann and Elizabeth Nichter. Wife of Franz Anthony Toennessen. Mother of Mary Monica, Edmund A., Charles Herbert, Francis L., Jacob E., Raymond Henry, Leonard Sebastian, and Elizabeth Amelia Adams.

"TOENNESSEN - In Canal Fulton, O., July 1, 1900, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Mary A. Toennessen, of 513 1/2 West State street, Akron. The remains will be brought to this city for burial."

"AWAY FROM HOME - An Akron Woman Died Sunday Evening

Mrs. F.A. Toenessen of 513 1/2 W. State st., died at the home of her sister in Canal Fulton at 8 o'clock Sunday night. Mrs. Toenessen was aged 42 years, 11 months and 20 days. She had been in ill health for several months. A husband and three children mourn her death. The remains will be brought to this city for burial."

"FUNERAL OF MRS. MARY A. TOENNESSEN THURSDAY - Brief Biographical Sketch of the Deceased

The remains of Mrs. Mary Toennessen who died Sunday evening at the home of her sister in Canal Fulton will arrive in this city Wednesday noon over the C.A. & C. Railroad.

The funeral will be held at 9 o'clock Thursday morning at St. Vincent de Paul's church. Interment in St. Vincent de Paul's cemetery.

Mrs. Toennessen had lived in Akron 11 years. She was the wife of Francis A. Toennessen of 513 1/2 W. State st. She had been in ill health for some time. On June 7 she went to Canal Fulton to visit her sister, thinking that the change might be of benefit to her.

Two months ago, Mr. and Mrs. Toennessen's daughter, Miss M. Monica, died and the great bereavement bore heavily on the family. Mrs. Toennessen's death was due to nervous prostration.

Mrs. Toennessen was born in Doerrenbach, Rheinpfalz, Germany, on July 10, 1857, and at the time of her death was aged 42 years, 11 months and 21 days. Her maiden name was Mary A. Nichter. At the age of 10 years she came to America, and with her mother located at Canal Fulton. On August 1, 1876, she married Mr. Francis A. Toennessen. To them eight children were born, three of whom are living. They are Miss Amelia E., aged 16 years, Raymond, age 7, and Leon, aged 3. The aged mother of the deceased, Mrs. Elizabeth Nichter, still resides at Canal Fulton. Two sisters and a brother yet survive. They are Mrs. Elizabeth O'Conner, of Canal Fulton, Mrs. Margaret Smith of Akron, and Mr. Peter Nichter, of Bellvue, O.

Mrs. Toennessen was a member and an official in Branch 180, L.C.B.A. since its organization. She was a kind and devoted wife and mother, and a true christian woman."


The Massillon Independent, 5 July 1900:

"Mrs. Mary A. Toennessen, aged 42 years, wife of Fransisca Toennessen, formerly a teacher in St. Mary's parochial school, died at her home at Canal Fulton at 9 o'clock Monday morning, of nervous prostration. Funeral services will be held Thursday at Akron."
