Carolyn had been married twice before she married Harrison Henrich. Her first two husbands were quite wealthy (and so was her father who was a lumber supplier). But then she married Harrison Henrich, who was not wealthy, but remained married to him for 24 years.

Being in high society was important to many people of the era, not the least of them being Carrie. Establishing at least the illusion of well-to-do was high on the priority list, and Carrie did it very well. The society columns had Carrie worth millions of dollars, when in fact she was flat broke and living beyond her means. Her money was all tied up in real estate that was being forfeited for tax liens!
