In 1840, the Comanche Indians made a raid on Victoria and Linnville ( present day Port Lavaca ). At the latter place Nancy Crosby* and her baby were captured. The Indians plundered, stole, and killed as they went along. The Texans raised a group of men to overtake and go into battle with them. At the Battle of Plum Creek Nancy was killed. Her baby had been killed several days before when its crying annoyed the Indians.


*Nancy's mother Elizabeth Bryan was a first cousin to Rebecca Bryan, wife of Daniel Boone the Great Frontiersman.

Nancy was buried under a large oak tree near the battlefield, about one and a half miles west of present day Lockhart. Ten years later, her body was reinterred, but the site of the second burial has been lost to history.
