In 1928 the Ireland family moved from Minnesota to Seattle.
Cliff graduated from West Seattle High School in 1933, after being an editor of the school newspaper. He then worked for the Seattle Star newspaper while attending the University of Washington.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Cliff enlisted in the Army Air Corps, graduating as an instrument flight instructor. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant when the war ended in 1945.
