Enlisted in the Army at Orono, Maine, in Co. I, 18th Infantry as a private; made a corporal when unit was organized. Made a sergeant soon after unit was transferred to Heavy Artillery. Promoted to captain and put in charge of Co. L in fall of 1864. He received the Medal of Honor for bravery in the Battle of Boydton Plank Road, October 27, 1864. Mustered out in September, 1865. Married Charlotte R. Valley, daughter of Joel and Matilda Valley, on July 26, 1868. Moved from Maine to East Tawas, Michigan, in 1877 and served at Postmaster there for a time.
He and his wife Charlotte had four children:

--Herbert King, b. 1873; m. Harriet Walker 10/7/1903 Saginaw, MI
--Stella M., b. 05/1876 ME; m. William B. Piper 1/14/1914 E. Tawas
