Wesley Howard Thomas was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 13, 1921, the son of Lawrence and Esther Bye Thomas. He lived his early childhood in Cedar Rapids and Colorado before moving to What Cheer with his parents to run the Thomas Grocery Store. Wesley was a 1940 graduate of What Cheer High School. He enlisted into the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 where he served as a gunnery mate during World War II. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned home and on May 4, 1947 he was united in marriage to Pearl Louise Garrett. To this union, five children were born: Richard Dean, Rhonda, William, Brenda, and Roger. Wesley worked at Hemsley Chevrolet in What Cheer before joining Pearl at the store. The couple had owned and operated Thomas Grocery since 1965. Wesley was a member of the What Cheer United Methodist Church, Lions Club, and served as a council member for the city of What Cheer. Over the years, Wesley grew very passionate of his store. He always had time for conversation with his customers and gave free Tootsie Rolls to the kids that stopped by. Wesley always said that he had never met a dessert that he didn't like, and each time family or friends would visit, he always made sure you were full before you left.
He is survived by three sons: Richard Dean (Vickie) Thomas of Montezuma, William Thomas of What Cheer, Roger (Margie) Thomas of What Cheer; two daughters: Rhonda and Brenda Thomas both of What Cheer. Wesley was also blessed with eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Wesley is preceded in death by his parents, wife Pearl, a brother Daryle, and daughter-in-law, Linda Thomas.
