Wesley Eckhardt Burial Service Held Saturday
Funeral services for Carl Wesley Eckhardt were held at the chapel of the Danekas Funeral home Saturday afternoon.
He died suddenly Thursday afternoon as he went out of his home to get into his car. The funeral and graveside rites were accompanied by a guard of American Legion members who fired their rifles in unison at the grave.
Taps were sounded.
Carl Wesley Eckhardt was born April 13, 1915, in Ritzville. He attended school here and attended Washington State college for two and a half years, studying electrical engineering. During World War II he served, enlisting as a second lieutenant pursuit pilot in December of 1941.
Of his five years of service, three years and eight campaigns were in North Africa. the Mediterranean and European theatres. He was an assistant squadron engineering officer, fighter squadron commander, fighter wing operations officer aircraft control and warning group commander to base commander. He was separated from the air force reserves as a major in 1955.
He married Dorothea Kembel and they had one son, Carl W. Eckhardt, jr.. His wife and son survive him here at the home at 209 E. Fourth avenue. Other survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Eckhardt of Ritzville; two sisters, Mrs. Edna Murray of Wenatchee and Mrs. Bernadine Wright of Spokane, and a brother, Walter Eckhardt of Richland.
He was a member of the Episcopal church, F&AM lodge No. 101, the Lions club, C. J. Newland post of the American Legion, all of Ritzville; and of the Spokane club. He belonged to Sigma Nu fraternity.
He was a Republican State central committeeman from Adams county for many years, and recently had become the member with the most senority on its executive committee. He was a past president of the Adams County Association of Wheat Growers and a past member and vice-president of the board of directors of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers.
The Rev. John Dempsey conducted the Episcopal service for the burial of the dead. Gordon Swyter sang "Abide With Me," accompanied by Mrs. Orville Moeller.
Pallbearers were William Charlton, Edward Cross, Jay Salkield, Frank Buford, Donald Kiehn and William Eckhardt. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Timm, David Hoefel, Dr. George Fast, L. E. Klock, W. Walters Miller, Virgil Treadwell, Robert Stanfield and Roland Kessler.
Interment was at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery.
