William Henry Darter was born in 1828 Illinois. His father was the Sheriff of Wythe County. He served with the 110th regiment Union Army out of Illinois during the civil war. He was a farmer and a blacksmith, and was the only pioneer from his family to settle in Arkansas. He lived in the same community of Buttermilk Arkansas till his death in 1912, and is buried at Tate cemetery in Pope County Arkansas.
