We had to put Ulysses, our beloved, 10-year old Doberman, to sleep on August 14.

He'd suffered diabetes and had numerous other health problems. We'd scheduled his euthanasia for Monday the 17th, but on Friday, he took a sudden turn for the worst and was in pain. We think it could have been bloat as he was continually having dry heaves. So we decided it could wait no longer.

His euthanasia went very well. He was surrounded by his family, and after he was given the injection, he instantly laid his head down, closed his eyes, and drifted off to a beautiful and peaceful sleep.

He was a great dog--obedient, well-behaved, loyal, and completely dedicated to his family. He was always on duty, watching over and protecting his family--including our many cats, which he loved.

He was greatly loved and will always be missed!

I'm sure he is in heaven now with his best friend, Lucy the cat, who is in the photos with him. The two were always together.

Six months before Ulysses passed away, we got a black, male Doberman puppy, whom we named Percy, short for Perseus. Getting a new puppy was unplanned and unexpected, and I will always believe that an angel led us to Percy to ease our grief during a time of loss.

We were going to the hardware store and, on a whim, I decided to drop by the pet store next door. There, my husband and I ran into a young couple with an adorable Doberman puppy. Upon hearing about Ulysses, they urged us to get a puppy from a recent litter (this is rare, because not too many people breed Dobermans in our area due to legal licensing restrictions).

Within a couple of days, we brought Percy home.

We'd selected the male puppy who'd rushed over and sat in my lap.

Of course, a puppy is a lot of work, especially a high energy puppy like a Doberman. And some would say that it was a terrible time to get a puppy with a terminally sick dog at home and the respective high stress caring for such a dog creates. And it was difficult at times, especially the first two months, but it turned out to be a wonderful decision.

Percy will never replace Ulysses, but we all love Percy greatly. I would be completely lost without him. Every time, I miss Ulysses, I hug Percy and it makes my heart a little lighter. Though they are unrelated, I always feel that, in some way, Ulysses lives through Percy.

I pray that percy has a long life like Ulysses did and good health.
