He was the oldest native-born resident of Blue township, and of Jackson county. He was born on a farm in the Blue Bottoms. His first wife was Sarah J. Heard, daughter of Jessie Heard. She's buried in Green Chapel Cemetery. they had 6 children.

His 2nd wife was Mrs. Fannie Jepson, nee Samples, and to this union 6 children were born. In 1879 he was elected to the state Legislature on the Greenback ticket and represented Jackson Co., MO for one term. He recalled his first trip to Independence in the early 1840s when Jackson county was largely an unsettled wilderness. He rode to the then frontier town with his mother on horseback. Mrs. Adams took with her a bolt of jean (denim) fabric which she had woven with her own hands and sold it for 50 cents per yard.
