Thomas Alexander Butner was the second of three known children of William Nathan Butner (1833-1899) and Mary Catherine Gertraude Kearney Butner (1847-1916), who married 26 Aug 1866 at Forsyth County, North Carolina.

Thomas married first to Anna Tremella Hege (1863-1898) on 03 Jun 1890 at Winston, Forsyth County, North Carolina. Thomas and Anna were the parents of four known children,
namely:

1. Etta Estelle Butner Brewer (1890-1975)
2. Ruth Hege Butner Yow (1891-1979)
3. Oscar William Butner (1893-1977)
4. infant son Butner (1896-1896)

After Anna died Thomas remarried to Lelia Mae Harvel (1876-1966) (who died and is buried in Florida) on 21 Sep 1898 at Winston, Forsyth County, North Carolina. Thomas and Lelia were the parents of eight known children, namely:

5. Paul B. Butner (1899-1950)
6. Myrtle Edith Butner Morgan (1901-1990)
7. Oliver Leo Butner (1905-1972)
8. Margaret Irene Butner Knight (1908-1984)
9. Thomas Alexander Butner Jr. (1910-1986)
