His father William Henry Makey died 4 April 1933 Spokane, WA. His mother, Emily P. (Oswin) Makey died 7 October 1949 also in Spokane.

His parents moved about 1904 to Big Timber, Sweet Grass County, Montana.

On 12 September 1917 Ernest enlisted in WWI in the United States Army. When he was discharged on 2 June 1919 he settled within a year in Harrington, WA.

He worked at and owned his own garage called Makey's Garage and it had a service station and tire shop.

He died from a heart attack in his home in Harrington, WA and was buried next to his grandfather, Richard Lowe.

He had a son, Lloyd Makey.
