On 12 September 1917 Ernest enlisted in WWI in the United States Army. When he was discharged on 2 June 1919 he settled within a year in Harrington, WA.
He worked at and owned his own garage called Makey's Garage and it had a service station and tire shop.
He died from a heart attack in his home in Harrington, WA and was buried next to his grandfather, Richard Lowe.
He had a son, Lloyd Makey.
